Abstract:

This report contains findings of the second phase of a three-year study into the effects of dancing for people with Parkinson’s, commissioned by the English National Ballet and conducted by University of Roehampton. Dance for Parkinson’s sessions were hosted at Markova House, London from 2011 and the programme also included four national hub pilot projects in Oxford (2013), Liverpool (2014), Ipswich (2015) and Cardiff (2015).

The research in this report collected qualitative and quantitative data for the London and national programmes to understand more about physical, psychological, social, and emotional changes as a result of participation in Dance for Parkinson’s. After summarising the programme, details of the dance sessions, and training for programme staff, artists, and volunteers, the report outlines research methodology and discusses physical and mental health impacts drawn from analysis of the data. It shows its positive impact on people with Parkinson’s in facilitating their development of confidence and strength, whilst temporarily relieving some symptoms of Parkinson’s in everyday life.

The study concludes that the dancing programme promotes a meaningful sense of community and facilitates social inclusion in participants, aids posture, fluency of movement, and general sense of body awareness while diminishing some daily symptoms of Parkinson’s, creates feelings of achievement, hope, and positivity, and improves perceived quality of life and freedom from some physical and social constraints of being an individual with Parkinson’s.
