Abstract:

The focus of this paper is to demonstrate how participating in the arts can help to transform the quality of people’s lives: by strengthening their self-esteem, self-respect and sense of identity; by working together and developing a feeling of belonging, and by seeking a measure of connectedness and coherence through different arts experiences. One of the main threads throughout the paper is to show how creative collaborative processes can enable any person, to build up a strong sense of who they are by empowering them to believe in themselves and take responsibility for their own lives and for those of others.

The paper also questions the purpose and relevance of the professional preparation of artists for a changing workplace.
