Abstract:

The Henderson Youth Art Project is a collaborative initiative between Kākano Youth Arts Collective, Unitec Institute of Technology and Auckland City Council. This evaluation set out to identify if this model of collaboration is a cost effective means by which to reduce vandalism, instil pride in the local community and to assess if it has long-term positive outcomes for disenfranchised young people.

It targets local youth who have a history of vandalism and graffiti, and encourages them to engage with the Kākano arts-based outreach programme at the Corban Estate Arts Centre, in order to try and reduce graffiti and vandalism in Henderson Town Centre. Teaching staff at UNITEC provide Kākano with artistic support and the opportunity for participants to obtain a tertiary degree through Unitec’s Foundation Art and Design Pathway. The collaboration is a pilot project funded by Auckland City Council.

The research set out to identify if this model of collaboration is a cost effective means by which to reduce vandalism, instil pride in the local community and to assess if it has long-term positive outcomes for disenfranchised young people.

The evaluation also measures project outcomes against local and national priorities, including the four major areas of cultural development within the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s 2014-18 Strategic Intentions: “create, preserve, engage and excel”.
