Abstract:
This policy paper from the Centre for Labour and Social Studies considers the contribution of arts and culture to improving our quality of life.
By looking at a range of arguments which recognise the relationship between arts, culture and society, this paper presents the case for public funding for the arts alongside inclusive, localised and democratic cultural policy. The author argues that a future cultural policy which genuinely responds to the evidence, and which hopes to fulfil the universal entitlement to art and culture, must be targeted at creating capacity within local areas and communities to work together to develop places and opportunities to participate.
