Abstract:

This report provides an overview of a research seminar which took place in October 2013 at Amgueddfa Cymru (the National Museum Wales). 34 participants from a wide range of professional backgrounds across the UK attended this seminar to explore the theme of cultural participation for children and young people experiencing poverty. The seminar was made possible by financial support from the Welsh Government.

Key questions discussed included:
• What difference can cultural participation make to the lives of children and young people experiencing poverty?
• What are the barriers to participation, and how can these be reduced?
• What practical steps can be taken to make public cultural provision accessible to the individuals, groups and communities whose lives it would benefit the most?
• How can cultural and heritage institutions make a positive contribution to wider anti-poverty initiatives?
