Abstract:

In this paper the author draws on literature dealing with Applied Theatre, Community Theatre, Grassroots Theatre, Community Cultural Development, Political Theatre, socially engaged arts practice and protest performance to develop an understanding of what Theatre for Social Change in the 21st century might be. She seeks to define the field, tease out the key problems and challenges and begin to explore ideas around best and ethical practice.
